Chapter 14

“It’s got to be one of those two,” Erin said. “Dodgson or Young.”

“And Young’s dead, so that leaves Dodgson,” Vic said.

Erin paused in the apartment lobby. “Vic, just because somebody’s dead doesn’t mean he wasn’t a murderer.”

“Yeah, but we can’t arrest a dead guy. And I really want to arrest somebody.”

“You already arrested Grant.”

“But he got away and you got to arrest him again. That didn’t count.”

“Poor Vic. And you didn’t even get to score with the person of interest.”

“Knock it off, O’Reilly. I know better than to screw around on the clock.”

“Except with that Russian girl.”

“How many times do I have to say it? I didn’t know she was with the Mob! You, on the other hand… Geez. How did it happen, anyway?”

“How did what happen?” They were outside now, next to Erin’s car. Rolf was watching them, head cocked, trying to figure out what the humans were talking about.

“You know what I mean. You and Carlyle. I know what you’re doing now. Was it always about that?”

Erin glanced quickly around to make sure no one was nearby. This was a dangerous subject. “Vic, we shouldn’t be talking about this,” she said.

“I’m not telling anybody anything,” he said. “What the hell do you think, I’m gonna get a cop killed by running my mouth? But I dare you to tell me you were always trying to turn him. What happened between the two of you?”

“Well, Vic, it’s like this. Boys and girls have different body parts. And when a boy and a girl like each other a whole lot… maybe you should ask your parents about it. They can explain how the whole thing works.”

“I just don’t know what you see in him.” Vic shook his head in disgust. “He’s a criminal. You know he’s a criminal. Hell, and a terrorist. Where’s your patriotism?”

“It’s not like he was with Al Qaeda or anything. The IRA… the Troubles were complicated, Vic. You’re not Irish. I don’t expect you to get it.”

“Right. Because I’m too dumb to understand. I’m just the big guy who kicks down doors.”

“I love him, Vic.”

“Yeah, I know. What I’m trying to figure out is why. I thought you were smarter than that.”

“Love isn’t smart. And he understands me. Hell, he trusts me more than any man I’ve ever known. He never tells me a lie. Never. How many guys can say that?”

“Lots of guys say it. That’s one of our best lies.”

“I tried dating civilians. It never worked out. They don’t understand the world we live in. And we don’t want them to. Look at Catherine and Webb, for crying out loud. She complains he doesn’t tell her anything, and the moment he does, she freaks out. You think I want to come home at the end of the day and just sit at the table staring at each other? I can talk to Carlyle. About anything. And he can help. He’s helped us crack more than one case.”

“I know you trust him. But you shouldn’t.
